GATE ECE Digital Circuits notes
Connect Boolean logic to circuit behavior, then account for state and timing in sequential designs.

01 · UNDERSTAND
Key concepts
Use these ideas to reason through a question before choosing a formula or an answer.
Combinational versus sequential logic
Combinational outputs depend on current inputs. Sequential outputs can depend on stored state. A latch is level-sensitive; a flip-flop is typically edge-triggered.
Minimization
Boolean identities and Karnaugh maps simplify functions. Dont-care input combinations can help minimization when those combinations truly cannot occur or their outputs are unspecified.
Timing
A synchronous path must allow propagation and setup time before the receiving clock edge. Hold-time constraints concern minimum path delay and clock skew; increasing the clock period alone does not fix every hold violation.
02 · WORK THROUGH IT
A worked teaching example
Attempt the problem first, then trace each step and compare your reasoning.
The problem
Simplify F(A,B) = AB + AB′ using Boolean algebra.
Step-by-step reasoning
- 1
Factor A from both terms: F = A(B + B′).
- 2
The complement law gives B + B′ = 1.
- 3
Use A × 1 = A.
Check your result
Compare your calculation and assumptions.
F = A; the output is independent of B.
03 · SPOT THE TRAPS
Common mistakes
- Treating a latch as an edge-triggered flip-flop.
- Using dont-cares for input patterns that can occur.
- Confusing setup constraints and hold constraints.
04 · CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING
Revision checklist
- Write the truth table for a small function.
- Identify storage and clock sensitivity.
- Check minimum and maximum delays separately.
Explain each point without the notes, then check it with an unfamiliar question. Print or save these notes as a PDF for your revision session.
